We Wrestle Not Against Flesh and Blood

← The Foe

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Ephesians 6:12

The Battle

Paul names the actual battlefield here, and it is worth taking seriously how easily this can be misread. Not against flesh and blood, the people who frustrate, oppose, or hurt you, but against principalities, powers, spiritual wickedness. The real enemy is consistently misidentified whenever human opponents become the primary target.

This is worth examining honestly against however much of your own conflict, frustration, and defensive energy has actually been aimed at people, coworkers, family, even fellow believers, when the actual battle this verse names was never against them at all. Misdirected warfare wastes strength on the wrong target entirely.

Notice the specific categories named: principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, spiritual wickedness in high places, comprehensive and specific, not vague. Paul is not describing a generic, abstract struggle. He is naming an actual, organized, spiritual opposition, real enough to require real armor, which this whole book will explore.

Whatever conflict currently occupies your own attention, examine today whether you have been fighting flesh and blood when the actual battle lies elsewhere entirely. This first day begins exactly where genuine warfare must begin, correctly identifying the actual enemy before any strategy against it can genuinely work.

Stand Firm

  • Notice any conflict where you have been fighting flesh and blood rather than the actual enemy.
  • Redirect your defensive energy today toward the actual, spiritual battle this verse names.
  • Name specifically what spiritual opposition might be operating behind a human conflict you are facing.

Prayer

Lord, help me see clearly that I wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the actual spiritual opposition this verse names. Redirect my strength rightly. Amen.

Carry this today

Misdirected warfare wastes strength fighting the wrong target entirely.
