Going To and Fro in the Earth

Part One · Aware · 1 minute read

← The Foe

“And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
Job 1:7

The Battle

This brief exchange names something worth noticing about the enemy’s actual scope and activity, going to and fro, walking up and down, restless, ongoing movement across the whole earth, not fixed attention on any single target, but broad, continuous activity worth genuine awareness.

This is worth holding as a needed corrective against imagining your own struggles as uniquely, personally targeted in a way that isolates you from the shared, common nature of this genuine warfare. This same restless activity, going to and fro, is described as ongoing across the whole earth, not narrowly focused on you alone.

Notice this exchange happens with God’s own direct knowledge and, in Job’s story, God’s own permission for what follows. Whatever this restless activity accomplishes, it does not operate entirely outside God’s own sovereign awareness and ultimate authority, even while genuinely, actively opposing his people across the earth.

Whatever struggle currently feels isolating, uniquely targeted, remember today this restless, ongoing activity described here is shared, common to believers everywhere, not narrowly aimed at you in isolation. And remember, too, this activity remains under God’s own ultimate, sovereign authority, never operating entirely outside his awareness.

Stand Firm

  • Consider your own struggle as shared, common warfare, not uniquely isolating experience.
  • Remember this activity remains under God’s own sovereign authority, not entirely unchecked.
  • Connect today with another believer, remembering this warfare is common, not isolating.

Prayer

Lord, remind me that whatever restless activity opposes me is common to believers everywhere, not uniquely isolating, and that it remains under your own sovereign authority. Amen.

Carry this today

This warfare is shared and common, not uniquely isolating, and remains under God’s authority.
