The Stronghold of Fear

Part Two · Break the Strongholds · 2 minute read

← The Forge

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7

The Reality

Fear is the quiet stronghold, the one no one confesses because it does not look like sin. It looks like caution, like being realistic, like just knowing your limits. But fear is a thief. It has talked more men out of their calling than lust ever talked into a bed. It does its work not by making you do wrong, but by making you do nothing.

Paul is blunt about the source: this spirit of fear is not from God. God gives three things instead, and each one is the direct answer to a fear. Power answers the fear that you are too weak. Love answers the fear that you are alone and unworthy. A sound mind answers the fear that your own thoughts will spin out and drown you.

The fearful man plays small so he cannot fail large. He does not lead, because he might be wrong. He does not open up, because he might be rejected. He does not take the risk of obedience, because he cannot see the outcome. And so his life shrinks quietly, one avoided thing at a time, until there is almost nothing left to live.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is obedience with fear still present in the room. You will not wait to feel unafraid; that day is not coming. You will feel the fear, and you will do the right thing anyway, because you were not given a spirit of fear. Move toward the thing you have been avoiding.

The Battle Plan

  • Name the specific thing fear has been talking you out of.
  • Take one concrete step toward it today, afraid and obedient.
  • Replace the fearful thought each time with: power, love, sound mind.

Prayer

Father, fear has disguised itself as wisdom and shrunk my life. This spirit is not from you. Fill the empty room with power, love, and a sound mind, and send me toward the very thing I have been avoiding. Amen.

Carry this today

Courage is obedience with the fear still in the room.
