“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua 1:9

The Reality

God said this to Joshua as he stood at the edge of everything he had ever feared: a land full of giants, a people to lead, a promise to seize, and Moses no longer there to lean on. And what does God command? Not comfort. Not caution. Courage. Be strong. Be brave. Do not be afraid. Notice that courage here is a command, not a feeling, which means it is something you choose, not something you wait to feel.

This matters because most men misunderstand courage completely. They think brave men do not feel fear, and so they wait to stop feeling afraid before they act, and the waiting never ends and the action never comes. But courage is not the absence of fear. It is moving forward with the fear still present, doing the right thing while your stomach is in knots. Joshua was almost certainly afraid. He was commanded to be courageous anyway.

And here is the ground the courage stands on, the reason it is not reckless: the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. The command to be brave is never given alone. It comes bolted to a promise of presence. God does not order you into the fear and then abandon you there. He goes with you into it. That is what makes biblical courage different from mere bravado.

You have a giant of your own, the thing you have been circling and avoiding for weeks, maybe years. The hard conversation. The step of obedience. The dream you buried because you were afraid to fail. Today, be strong and of a good courage. Move toward it. Not because you feel ready, but because you were commanded, and because you do not go alone.

The Battle Plan

  • Name the giant you have been avoiding out of fear.
  • Take one courageous step toward it today, afraid but obedient.
  • Anchor the courage: say out loud that God goes with you into it.

Prayer

Lord, you commanded courage, not comfort, and you bolted it to your presence. So I will be strong and of a good courage, and move toward the very thing I fear, because you go with me wherever I go. Amen.

Carry this today

Courage is commanded, and I never go alone.
