“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.”
The Reality
Character is not built in the big, dramatic moments. It is revealed there. It is built in the small ones, the thousand tiny choices no one applauds and no one records. How you keep a small promise. Whether you finish the boring task well. If you show up on time. Whether you tell the truth when a small lie would cost you nothing. Greatness is not made of great things. It is made of small things done faithfully, over and over.
Jesus states the principle as a law of the soul: the man who is faithful in little is faithful in much, and the man who cheats in little cheats in much. There is no such thing as a man who is dishonest in small things and trustworthy in large ones. The character you display when the stakes are low is the exact character that will run the show when the stakes are high. The small test is the real test.
This is quietly convicting, because most of us are waiting for the big arena to prove ourselves, while failing the small tests happening all around us right now. We dream of the heroic moment while breaking little promises, cutting little corners, and telling ourselves it does not count because it is small. But it all counts. It is all forming the man. There are no throwaway reps.
So stop despising the small. Do the little duty in front of you as if God himself assigned it, because he did. Keep the small promise. Finish the unseen task with excellence. Be honest when honesty costs you nothing, so that you will be honest when it costs you everything. The man who is faithful in the least is being trusted, quietly, with more.
The Battle Plan
- Do one small, unseen task today with total excellence.
- Keep one small promise you were tempted to let slide.
- Be honest in one small thing where a lie would cost you nothing.
Prayer
Lord, I have waited for the big moment while failing the small tests all around me. Teach me that character is built in the least. Make me faithful in the little duty in front of me, so you can trust me with much. Amen.
Carry this today
Faithful in the least, faithful in much. No throwaway reps.
