The Strength of a Servant

Part Four · Become a Man of Character · 2 minute read

← The Forge

“But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.”
Mark 10:43-44

The Reality

The world has one definition of a great man: he is served. People work for him, wait on him, arrange themselves around his comfort and his ego. Jesus takes that definition, turns it completely upside down, and hands it back. In his kingdom the great man is not the one served but the one who serves, and the highest of all is the servant of everyone. This is not weakness. It is the rarest and hardest form of strength there is.

Understand who said this and how he proved it. Jesus was not a weak man romanticizing service because he had no power. He had all power, and he knelt down and washed the filthy feet of the very men who would abandon him within hours. He had every right to be served, and he chose the towel. Strength under control, aimed at the good of others, is the whole point of manhood, and it looks like a servant.

This confronts the counterfeit masculinity that measures a man by how many people serve him, how loud his voice is, how much space he takes. That is not strength. That is a scared boy in a big body, using power to fill an empty place. The truly strong man has nothing to prove, so he can stoop. He can serve his wife, his children, the man beneath him, without feeling smaller for it, because his greatness does not depend on being seen.

So become great the only way that lasts. Look for the lowest job in the room and take it. Serve someone today who can do nothing for you in return. Lead your home not by demand but by example, going first, carrying the most, complaining the least. This is the strength these thirty days were building toward: a man strong enough to bend down.

The Battle Plan

  • Take the lowest, least-seen task in your home or work today.
  • Serve one person who can do nothing for you in return.
  • Lead someone today by going first and carrying the most.

Prayer

Lord, you had all power and chose the towel. Break the counterfeit strength in me that needs to be served. Make me great your way: the servant of all, strong enough to stoop, secure enough to go low. Amen.

Carry this today

The strong man is strong enough to bend down.
