“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Path
This closes the first movement of this book with a specific, well-known image worth examining precisely: a lamp unto my feet, not a floodlight illuminating the entire distant horizon, but a lamp, providing enough light for the next actual step, immediate and sufficient, without necessarily revealing the whole path stretching far ahead.
This is worth holding against the anxious desire many crossroads produce, wanting the whole path clearly visible before taking a single step. This verse describes something more modest and more sustainable, sufficient light for my feet, the actual, immediate step, trusting the lamp to continue providing light as each subsequent step is actually taken.
This closes the loop this whole first movement has traced. Naming two ways honestly, entering the strait gate deliberately, choosing life actively, standing and seeing before rushing forward, distrusting mere internal certainty, refusing comfortable halting, trusting rather than leaning on your own understanding alone, praying and waiting genuinely, trusting guidance to come at each actual turning.
As this movement closes, receive this lamp today as genuinely sufficient, even if it does not illuminate the entire distant path. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, enough for this actual step, trusted to remain a light unto my path as each subsequent step is genuinely, faithfully taken.
Walk the Path
- Release the desire for the whole path illuminated, and receive light for just this step.
- Take the next actual step today, trusting the lamp to continue providing sufficient light.
- Carry this first movement’s whole arc forward into this week’s turn toward seeking wisdom.
Prayer
Lord, your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path, sufficient for this actual step, even without the whole distant path fully illuminated yet. Amen.
Carry this today
A lamp for the next step is sufficient, even without the whole path illuminated.
