A Broken and Contrite Heart

Part Two · Broken · 1 minute read

← The Freed

“For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
Psalm 51:17

The Chain

David writes this after his affair with Bathsheba and the death of Uriah, genuinely severe failures, and it is worth noticing what he names as the actual, acceptable offering, not accomplished sacrifice, not sufficient religious performance, but broken spirit, contrite heart, brokenness itself named as what God actually desires here.

This second movement, turning from the first movement’s honest naming toward genuine breaking, opens with this crucial reframe. Breaking is not failure to overcome, some lesser, disappointing substitute for successful, unbroken strength. It is named here directly as the actual, acceptable sacrifice, thou wilt not despise.

This is worth holding against however much shame has made your own genuine brokenness over this pattern feel like additional failure, rather than this verse’s actual claim, the sacrifice God genuinely desires, not despised but received, worth offering honestly rather than hiding as further evidence of inadequacy.

Whatever brokenness you currently carry over your own struggle, offer it today as this verse describes, not hidden shame but genuine sacrifice, broken and contrite, trusting God’s own stated response, thou wilt not despise, received rather than rejected, exactly the offering this whole movement will explore as the actual path toward genuine freedom.

Break the Chain

  • Offer your own genuine brokenness today as sacrifice, not hidden shame.
  • Trust God’s stated response, thou wilt not despise, rather than assuming further rejection.
  • Release any belief that brokenness itself is additional failure rather than the acceptable offering.

Prayer

Lord, my heart is broken and contrite over this pattern. Thank you that this is the actual sacrifice you desire, not despised, but genuinely received. Amen.

Carry this today

Brokenness is not additional failure. It is the sacrifice God actually desires.
