He Sits As a Refiner

Part One · the Fire · 1 minute read

← The Furnace

“And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver.”
Malachi 3:3

The Refining

An ancient refiner did not throw metal into the fire and walk away. He sat, watching closely, because silver can be ruined in seconds if left too long or pulled too soon. The image here is not of a God who starts your trial and disappears. It is of a God who sits, attentive, the entire time you are in it.

This changes what the heat means. A furnace left unwatched is simply destruction. A furnace watched by a skilled refiner is a controlled, purposeful process, with a clear intention and a clear endpoint. The difference is not the fire. It is who is sitting beside it, and what they are watching for.

The old refiners had a saying: you know the work is finished when you can see your own reflection in the surface of the molten silver. God is not refining you toward some arbitrary standard. He is refining you until his own image is visible, clearly, in what you have become.

You are not alone in this heat, and you are not forgotten in it. He is sitting right here, watching this exact moment, waiting for what he intends to see.

In the Fire

  • Picture God seated beside your specific fire today, not distant from it.
  • Ask him what he is watching for, and what he intends to reveal.
  • Thank him for not leaving the furnace unwatched.

Prayer

Refiner, you sit beside this fire and watch closely, not carelessly. Do your careful work in me today, and let what remains reflect you. Amen.

Carry this today

He is not distant from the heat. He is sitting right beside it.
