“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.”
The Refining
Peter is writing to people scattered by real persecution, and he does not minimize it. He calls it heaviness, manifold temptations, genuine grief. But he places something next to that grief that changes its weight: your faith, tested this way, is more precious than gold, and gold itself is tested by fire to prove it is real.
This is the whole logic of testing. Untested gold might be genuine or might be a clever counterfeit. There is no way to know without the fire. The same is true of faith. A faith that has never been tested can claim to be strong, but it has not yet been proven. Fire is not the enemy of your faith. It is what proves it real.
Notice what the tested faith is found unto: praise and honour and glory, not someday in a vague eternity, but at the appearing of Jesus Christ, a specific, certain event. The trial you are in now is not wasted labor. It is producing something that will be seen, honored, and praised, on a day already fixed.
So do not measure this fire only by what it costs you now. Measure it also by what it is proving about the faith God has already placed in you.
In the Fire
- Name one way your faith has already been proven, not just claimed, in past trials.
- Consider what this current fire might be proving that ease never could.
- Hold this trial today as a test your faith can pass, not merely survive.
Prayer
Lord, this fire is heavy, but let it prove what is real in me rather than destroy it. Let my tested faith be found, one day, unto praise and honour and glory. Amen.
Carry this today
Fire does not create fake faith. It proves real faith.
