A Threefold Cord

← The Vineyard

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour... and if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The Vine

The Preacher builds his case for partnership practically, not sentimentally. Two are better than one because of a good reward for their labour, because if one falls the other can help him up, because two can withstand what one alone could not. This is not romantic language. It is the sober observation of someone who has watched both partnership and isolation up close.

Notice the progression to three: a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Two strands, twisted together, are strong. Add a third and the cord becomes stronger still, harder to break than either the pair alone or a single strand. Many read this as picturing marriage plus God, the third strand making the union stronger than the couple could be alone.

This reframes what your marriage is actually for, beyond companionship and beyond even mutual help in hardship. A marriage with God as its third strand is measurably, structurally different from a marriage of two alone, however strong their affection. It has a strength neither partner, nor even their combined strength, can produce by themselves.

If your marriage feels like two strands straining against real pressure, consider today whether the third strand, God himself, actually woven into the daily fabric of the relationship, might be the missing source of strength this proverb describes.

Tend the Vine

  • Notice whether God is genuinely woven into your marriage’s daily fabric, or merely nearby.
  • Invite him actively into one specific area of strain in your marriage today.
  • Thank him for one instance where your spouse has already helped you up when you fell.

Prayer

Lord, be the third strand in our marriage, not merely nearby but actually woven in. Make our cord not quickly broken, stronger than the two of us could be alone. Amen.

Carry this today

Two strands are strong. Three, with him woven in, are stronger.
