Be Ye Kind

← The Vineyard

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Ephesians 4:32

The Vine

This verse sits directly after yesterday’s instruction about anger, and it names the practical alternative: kind, tenderhearted, forgiving. These are not abstract virtues but specific postures available in the exact moments anger or hurt tempts you toward their opposite, harshness, hardness of heart, withheld forgiveness.

Notice the standard given for this forgiveness: even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Not a vague call to be generally nicer, but a specific measuring line, the same forgiveness you have received from God, extended now toward your spouse. This raises the bar considerably above ordinary politeness or convenient tolerance.

This is worth sitting with honestly. The forgiveness God extended to you was not earned, was not deserved, cost him everything, and was given fully rather than partially or conditionally. This is the actual standard Paul holds up for how you forgive your spouse, not merely tolerating their faults but forgiving as completely as you yourself have been forgiven.

Whatever needs forgiving in your marriage today, measure your own forgiveness against this standard, not against how forgiving you feel like being, but against how completely God, for Christ’s sake, has already forgiven you.

Tend the Vine

  • Name something in your marriage that currently needs forgiving.
  • Measure your forgiveness today against God’s own complete forgiveness of you, not your feelings.
  • Be tenderhearted today, specifically, in one interaction that might otherwise turn hard.

Prayer

Lord, forgive through me the way you have forgiven me, fully, for Christ’s sake. Let me be kind and tenderhearted today, not merely tolerant. Amen.

Carry this today

Forgive as completely as you have been forgiven, not merely as you feel like forgiving.
