A Fruitful Vine

Part Three · Harvest · 2 minute read

← The Vineyard

“Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways... Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”
Psalm 128:1, 3

The Vine

This psalm gives the whole book its title image directly, a wife pictured as a fruitful vine, specifically by the sides of thine house, rooted close, productive, genuinely part of the household’s actual life rather than decorative or distant. This is not merely aesthetic imagery. Vines require tending, seasons, patience, and produce real, tangible fruit over time.

Notice this blessing is connected directly to the opening condition: blessed is every one that feareth the LORD, that walketh in his ways. The fruitful vine is not described as automatic or guaranteed regardless of how the household actually lives. It is connected specifically to a household ordered around genuine reverence for God, walking in his ways as the actual context this fruitfulness grows within.

This closes the loop this whole book has been tracing, from the leaving and cleaving of the first day, through the pruning of the second movement, to this image of an actual, fruitful vine, productive specifically because it has been rooted, tended, and pruned across the whole season this book has walked through together.

Whatever vine your own marriage has become across however many years, receive this psalm’s picture today. Fruitful, by the sides of thine house, genuinely rooted and productive, not because fruitfulness happened automatically, but because it grew specifically from a household ordered, however imperfectly, around genuine reverence for God.

Tend the Vine

  • Notice today the actual fruit your marriage has already produced, however imperfect.
  • Reorder one specific part of your household today around genuine reverence for God.
  • Thank God for the fruitful vine your marriage has become, tended across real seasons.

Prayer

Lord, let our marriage be a fruitful vine by the sides of our house, rooted in genuine reverence for you. Thank you for the fruit already grown across these seasons. Amen.

Carry this today
