“But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
The Path
James adds a specific qualifier to yesterday’s promise about asking for wisdom: in faith, nothing wavering. The asking itself is not sufficient on its own if it is accompanied by genuine wavering, described here as instability, a double minded man, unable to settle, tossed like a wave driven by shifting wind.
This is worth examining honestly against however much your own asking for wisdom has been accompanied by this kind of wavering, genuinely wanting direction while simultaneously resisting whatever direction might actually be given, holding multiple, competing outcomes equally in mind without genuine willingness to actually receive and follow through on an answer.
This does not mean you must already know the answer before asking, which would make the asking itself unnecessary. It means the asking should be accompanied by genuine openness to actually receiving direction, not a double minded hedging that quietly wants confirmation of a predetermined preference while appearing to remain open.
Whatever wisdom you are asking for today, examine honestly whether you are asking in faith, nothing wavering, genuinely willing to receive and follow whatever direction actually comes, or whether double mindedness has quietly compromised the asking itself, wanting an answer while resisting whatever answer might actually arrive.
Walk the Path
- Examine honestly whether double mindedness has compromised your own asking for wisdom.
- Ask again today specifically in faith, nothing wavering, genuinely open to the actual answer.
- Notice any predetermined preference you have been quietly hoping the answer would confirm.
Prayer
Lord, let me ask in faith, nothing wavering, genuinely open to receive whatever direction actually comes, not double minded, hedging toward a predetermined preference. Amen.
Carry this today
Genuine asking requires genuine openness to receive whatever answer actually comes.
